Scratchboard, also know as scraperboard, is a panel or 'board' covered with a thin layer of fine white clay. On top of this clay is a layer of ink which is typically black, although some artists may apply their own coloured inks. A sharp tool is then used to 'scratch' away the ink to reveal the lighter clay underneath.
